The other day I was asked what is a GHB. So I thought I would share with you what a GHB is if you didn't know what one was.

A GHB is bag is a GET HOME BAG. Its main purpose is to get you home either from work, school, or where ever you may be. Its contents don't differ from a BOB however its wise not to pack a GHB like a BOB. This bag is generally made for a short term trek or roughly 5 miles. The only thing you pack is what you will need and leave it in your vehicle until you need it. So to show you what my GHB contains, here is an item by item list.

GHB:
Food (Slim Jim and power bar)
Change of clothes (civilian)
Water (1qt canteen)
Two extra pair of socks (black boot socks)
Pen
Notepad
Jacket (already in car)
ACU Rain Jacket (already in car)

As you see its not much. Its enough to get me home if I had to walk and it wont take me all day to get home either. I don't venture beyond 5-8 miles from post if I don't need to. That's why I also don't carry any 'over night' items. I've also chosen civilian clothes to change into if I'm still in uniform. . The reason is because if I am caught outside the base when something happens, and me being in the military starts to become a problem, I just become a regular Joe and mix in with the crowd. I'm also advising civvies in any GHB due to this reason. Its just good to have an extra set to change into if you get wet or if something else happens to the set your wearing.

All this fits in a Piper Backpack with plenty of room to spare. I use to use this bag during convoys to St. Louis or Springfield, MO and it fits everything I needed for the trips. Now I rely on a 3 day assault bag for those type of missions. Bottom line is that any type of bag can be used. A GHB is just that, a bag with the things you need to get home.

GHB is a small bag with basic ultilities to get back home in an emergancy. BOB is usually a larger bag designed for the long hual to your bug out location when things really get bad.

Think of a GHB as a mini BOB

One thing you want to keep in my mind maybe is to have an extra pair of gym shoes. I work in an office environment these days and have to wear dress shoes by dress code, so I keep some gym shoes under my desk next to my go bag. All I know is according to some of the firefighters at LAFD, downtown LA will be covered in up to 13 feet of glass, so I won't be able to drive home. I want to make sure my feet are in good condition all the way home, which will be 12 miles give or take.

Maybe I can help out and get a pic of my bag to help out. If the wife stops hiding the damned camera on me...
