Bug out kits are a key tool, i have mine in a black jump bag ready to go.... not exactly foot worthy (working on that part) but i also have it near my crate of MREs.
just a question S.E.R.E what kind of self sufficiency tools to you carry with you.
my self sufficiency set-up:
10 feet of fishing line
5 fishing hooks
1 20 inch Hatchet
2 Flint sets
20 feet of reinforce nylon sting (for bow making)

I'm still working on a small bag for my trunk. The one I'm thinking of is a small tool bag (inconspicuous).
- waterproof matches and firestarters in a waterproof bag
- Ka-Bar 7"
- Spool of twine, string, or paracord
- small pair of 10x25 binoculars
- small first-aid kit
I still have plenty of room, so I will probably add more. I am considering adding the following:
- compass (definitely)
- small handgun
- small bottle of liquor (painkiller)
- flare
- flashlight
- small radio
- small quantity of silver rounds
The flashlight I'm kind of iffy on. In some situations it makes sense. However, if I did have one, I might be tempted to use when I shouldn't. If you're in a hostile area the last thing you want to do is draw attention to yourself. At night, turning on a light that could be seen for miles is a good way to draw that attention. In fact,
make a note everyone. If you're ever in such a situation, where you have to lead a group to safety in a hostile area. First you do is confiscate the flashlights. Otherwise you'll have people turning them on when you're trying to hide, kids shining them in people's eyes, and the whole time, you'll be killing the night vision you should be working hard to develop.
Liquor, maybe. Biggest problem I see is that alcohol thins the blood. With a fresh bullet wound or knife wound, that would make things worse. For prolonged pain, it could be an asset. I'm no doctor, but it seems like a decent idea.
Flare. I know nothing about these. Don't know if they expire, what kind I would buy, or anything. Just a thought.
Silver. For trading for food, etc, should the situation call for it.
The handgun is an ongoing debate. It's legal for me to carry in my trunk most places, so little problem there. Caliber is a consideration. .22lr would make sense, as it would be easy to carry an extra 250 rounds w/o adding too much extra bulk/weight. Try carrying 250rds of .45 or 9mm in a small bag. A Walther P22 with suppressor (legal) would be perfect. Compact, quiet, usable.

Love the ISSAK Rig, I really wish I didnt have to sell mine but I needed the cash I had the SAW rig as well a great system....I'm actually going to get their MOLLE platform in the same cut its around $100 and is the same cut as the ISSAK but with MOLLE/PALS webbing instead of built in pouches and the back has webbing for hydro carriers. Awesome choice though I love it!

Here is our solo vehicle GHB. It is a Eddie Bauer diaper bag/backpack. It is fairly sturdy, made from cordura, lots of pockets and ealastic band organizers inside. We chose this bag because it low key and will not be raising any eyebrows in an urban enviroment and it was laying around collecting dust, so we decided to put it to good use.

Here is a picture of the contents:

List of contents:
- 16oz bottle of water (barely noticeable in the upper left corner)
- Pilots flask and sport's bottle top(white) filled with denatured alcohol(stove fuel)
- Stainless steel cup
- Wind screen for stove (made from a disposable aluminum baking pan)
- Old sock to use as a pot holder
- Lid for cup (again made from aluminum baking pan)
- Pepsi can alcohol stove
- pot/cup stand (made from aluminum expanded metal)
- 2 books of MRE matches, mini bic lighter and small trioxane fuel tab
- 550 para cord
- Mini Mag-light w/belt sheath
- Cobra FRS/GMRS two-way radio w/ weather band
- Survival kit inside of small Nesquik container
- Brunton compass
- .7 mil 9'x12' plastic sheeting w/ adhesive grommets (shelter)
- Zip-loc containing napkins(tougher than TP and perfect size for the job)
- 12 Kashi trail mix bars
- two 55gal contractor trash bags (water collection, rain gear, shelter, etc.)
- First Aid kit (added Imodium, aleeve, band-aids w/antibiotics, mole skin)
- Gold bond powder (foot powder)
- Knife/fishing hook sharpener (blue pen like thing)
- Spare batteries for radio and mini-mag
- Magnesium/flint fire starter
- Bic lighter
- Mini M&m tube filled with Vaseline soaked cotton balls (fire tinder)
- Small glow sticks
- Small note pad w/pencil
Wife is making a camo cover that can be attached if need be. Spare socks and clothing(OD flight suit and boonie hat) are in the vehicle and will be added depending on which one of us happens to be in needing to bug out. Also might add a Nalgene type bottle as well.

anybody know where i can get a reasonable size radio to communicate to people. My plan is to run into the mountains in my area is something goes on. The only way they will get me out would be with artillary or air support. No tank would be able to get up, and no infantry company would be able to get to where i plan to stay. I plan on getting a seperate bag to keep water and food in so i can stay up there a long time until i have to go for animals.

My bad, I only read folding shovel...Well here in Florida you would need some sun bock lotion, otherwise you will be walking around with a sunburn...and you could also get a collapsable fishing pole, they work pretty well and are really easy to carry when callapsed.

Well, you could get rid of the bugspray and the lantern and get a propane lantern that repels bugs...just a suggestion, though then you would need to carry a small propane tank and you may still get bit by bugs if you go somewhere far from the propane lantern.
JasterUSSAF
Sep 8 2008, 07:25 PM
If you do have a spot planned out that's your bug out hole, you could always pre-stock it. If you do decide lantern with propane put a couple of the small tanks up there and bury 4 feet down. Set up a little cache of supplies that just in case SHTF when you dont have your bag you can run there and be set for a bit before having to go out and get more.

Zippo with no extra fuel? Fuel evaporates in zippos only after a week or so even in storage. A first aid kit would be good too

You have all that stuff (including NVG's and thermals) and you're not even 18? I wish I had your parents!
What I carry in my BOB which is a medium size messenger bag is the following:
-OQO palmtop computer with DC power cord and spare battery (contains important documents and entertainment/communications potential)
-Weather resistant notepad
-Grease pencil
-Ballpoint pen
-Standard #2 pencil
-Sharpie marker
-3 yards of duct tape sans donut
-Roll of electrical tape
-1 Box Ball point 9mm ammo (50 rds)
-1 Box JHP 9mm ammo (50 rds)
-2 boxes 00 Buck shotgun shells (10rds total)
-1 box .22LR ammo (50rds)
-Small 7X monocular
-Flashlight with red/green as well as normal white capability and a spare 12-pack of batteries for it
-Large and small bic lighter and set of weather resistant matches
My sidearm is on my hip at all times, minus sleeping/showering. And the long guns are slinged onto my back whichever would be easier to get to at the moment. I am a true believer in that your sidearm is used to fight back to your long gun. And all that stuff might weigh me down an extra 20 lbs or so. The bulkier items are in my truck which include:
-Large first aid kit with OTC medication and insect repellant
-Space blankets (4)
-Folding shovel
-Rope/tow kit (including spare wheel/tire)
-Spare 5 Gallon gas tank

Well (since no one answered this directly before), you can find large portions of a bug out kit that all come together at www.cheaperthandirt.com there are quite a bit of things that you could sqeeze into your future bugout kit to make it worth the money, sadly, some of it may be a little bit expensive for you now. But I hope it helps a little, just model yours after everyone elses and then make your own personal preferances on name brands, quantities, ect...
